The Luhya tribe are part of the Bantu collection of tribes. The Luhya are the second largest tribe in Africa and are made up of 18 sub-tirbes. The fertile land in the western region of Kenya, where they have lived, was taken from them by British colonialists.
The Luhyas practiced polygamy and the respect given to men was gaged on how many wives he has. Although today they no longer practice polygamy a dowery is still given in some of the sub-tribes. circumcission is a ritual that marks boys turning into men which takes place in a cermony durring August and December. However, modern Luhyas often have this process done at birth in a hosbital.
Luhyas play rugby, soccer, and partake in traditional bull fighting. Most of the national soccer team are Luhya people. Most Luhyas are Christian although many mix Christianity with African traditions. Most of Kenya's sugur is produced in Luhya land. Their ethnic food is Ugali, which consists of maize flour, casssava or millet flour, and is common in every meal.
